HTC 1080p video, 5.1 audio phones and tablet future

HTC held a press conference in Johannesburg, South Africa recently and unveiled some very interesting plans for its future devices. Although no details were made available, the HTC local MD in South Africa revealed that HTC plans to introduce phones with 1080p video capture functionality and 5.1 channel audio capability in the future. There is also an Android based device that is still under wraps though general speculation points at a tablet PC style device set to challenge the Apple iPad.

While Samsung has been the main innovating force in the cellphone industry in recent times (i.e. at the MWC 2010 where they revealed devices with Bluetooth 3.0, projector functionality and Wi-Fi 802.11 n as well as Bada OS), HTC intends to push the envelope in the cellphone industry by introducing a handset capable of 1080p HD video recording.

Of course, devices with 720p HD recording are already out and in the works of many companies but the 1080p functionality planned by HTC will be the next step in video recording capabilities for mobile phones.

On the other hand, Samsung already has mobile cellphones capable of 5.1 channel surround sound but HTC plans on making up lost ground as early as Q3 this year with help from Yamaha.

There is also speculation that a HSPA+ capable phone (meaning a data transfer rate of up to 14.4 Mbps) could be out around the same time period from HTC.

The Android based possible tablet is of course the most intriguing, as the existence of the device has been confirmed but it is not yet known whether it will be tablet or perhaps some form of mobile computer such as a smartbook perhaps.

One thing is for sure, while expected features have been stated, there is no given timeline and it would be foolhardy indeed to expect devices with 1080p functionality, 5.1 channel audio or HSPA+ from HTC any time this year without further word from HTC.
