Chip Comparison:

The new Apple iPad 3 is equipped with A5x chip where as the iPad had an A5 chip for processing.

Display Comparison:

The new iPad 3 has a high-res retina display with a 2048 x 1536 pixel resolution 264 pixels per inch. However, the iPad 2 has a 1024 x 768 pixel resolution at 132 pixels per inch.


The new iPad has an one of a kind iSight camera, which basically is a 5 mega pixel camera with the options of auto focus and face detection. Not only this, the new camera in iPad 3 gives the users the option of tap face detection while capturing still pictures or recording videos. Also to note, the new iPad 3 has the option of video recording in HD format, 1080 pixels with 30 frames per second. However, the iPad 2 has the option of video recording in HD format as well but with 720 mega pixels at max.

Dimension Comparison:

There is not much of a difference between the size of the two iPads, however the weight slightly differs. The new iPad 3 is a bit heavier than the iPad 2. The iPad 3 weighs 1.44 pounds (652g) whereas the iPad 2 weighs 1.33 pounds (601g).


The connectivity options in the two iPads does not vary much, however, since the up gradation of technology in general, the new iPad 3 has Bluetooth 4.0 whereas the iPad 2 has Bluetooth 2.1 EDR technology.

Power and battery:

The battery timing, both for stand by and usage, is the same for iPad 2 and iPad 3.

In all, there are a few differences as mentioned above between the new iPad 3 and iPad 2. And these difference generally put a ‘difference’ in price of $100 according to the specification up-gradation.
