Sony Ericsson Vivaz and Vivaz pro smart phones preview

In addition to the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini and mini pro smart phones, Sony Ericsson also showcased the Sony Ericsson Vivaz and Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro cellphones at the MWC. The Sony Ericsson Vivaz mobile phone is scheduled to be released in Q1 and the Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro is scheduled to be released sometime in Q2 this year.

The Sony Ericsson phones at the MWC (Mobile World Congress) in Barcelona, Spain were mostly without innovation and Sony Ericsson seemed content to refine what they already had out in the market. Which is not at all a bad thing seeing as many of the phones available in the market already feature next-gen technology and suffer rather from looks, lack of a decent user interface and functionality.

At the MWC, Sony Ericsson highlighted their new user interface known as the UXP interface which seems to be a step in the right direction.

All the major mobile phone manufacturers seem to be stepping up their efforts in providing a decent user interface on smart phones (for example HTC with SenseUI, Motorola with MOTOBLUR and Palm with their WebOS) and Sony Ericsson is hardly leading the way, but it is still a step in the right direction.

The Sony Ericsson Vivaz and Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro mobile phones are essentially the same (same as Xperia X10 mini and mini pro) with the only difference being that the Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro features a QWERTY style slide-out keyboard.

One of the (to us anyway) immediate problem with the Sony Ericsson Vivaz and Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro are that they run Symbian OS when quite clearly Android is a much better option (lets not talk about Microsoft Windows Mobile or Phone or whatever they’re calling it).

However, the Sony Ericsson Vivaz and Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro smart phones do have some interesting features (in terms of hardware in any case) and amongst the various technical specifications the following stood out for us: HD recording capable cameras on both although the Sony Ericsson Vivaz features an 8 MP one and the Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro a 5 MP one, a 360 x 640 pixel resolution display on a TFT resistive touchscreen (some might dislike the resistive part), a 720 MHz processor and quad band GSM and dual band UMTS for HSPA class 3G access.

The Sony Ericsson Vivaz and Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro also feature a microSD and microSDHC compatible slot which should easily allow support for up to 8 GB of expandable memory if not more.

A-GPS, Wi-Fi, FM radio, geo-tagging, a lithium-polymer battery and Bluetooth compatibility round-off these very handy devices.

To conclude, we find that the Sony Ericsson Vivaz and Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro smart phones are very classy devices, our only sore point being the use of Symbian OS instead of Android. Sony Ericsson has very nicely demonstrated their new design philosophy that is inspired by “human curves” with these devices which feel very comfortable and solid but not unpleasingly so when being handled.
